PANCHAKARMA IN INTEGRATIVE MEDICINE: BRIDGING TRADITIONAL AYURVEDIC PRACTICES WITH MODERN THERAPEUTIC APPROACHES
Introduction: Panchakarma, the cornerstone of Ayurvedic therapy, encompasses a range of detoxification and rejuvenation techniques aimed at maintaining homeostasis and preventing disease. Integrative medicine emphasizes combining traditional systems with evidence-based modern therapies for holistic health outcomes. Methods: A comprehensive literature review was conducted using databases such as PubMed, Scopus, Web of Science, and Google Scholar. Inclusion criteria focused on clinical trials, observational studies, systematic reviews, and classical Ayurvedic texts discussing Panchakarma. Exclusion criteria included non-peer-reviewed articles and studies lacking adequate methodological rigor. Results: Evidence from traditional texts and modern research suggests that Panchakarma exerts immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and metabolic effects. Techniques such as Virechana, Basti, and Nasya show potential benefits in chronic disease management, stress reduction, and functional disorders. Integration with conventional medicine appears feasible, particularly in supportive care for metabolic syndrome, musculoskeletal disorders, and psychosomatic conditions. Discussion: While promising, the scientific evidence remains limited by small sample sizes, heterogeneity of protocols, and lack of standardized outcome measures. Comparative analyses indicate conceptual parallels between Ayurvedic detoxification and modern approaches like pharmacotherapy and physiotherapy, highlighting the potential for synergistic outcomes. Future research should focus on rigorous clinical trials, biomarker assessment, and mechanism-based studies to validate integrative approaches.
